Sign, Signifier, Signified

Sign, Signifier, Signified – The sign is the basic unit of text, and thus of thought. A sign is a thing that means something. All words are signs. All images intended to represent something are signs. All sounds that mean something are signs. Signs have two halves:

  1. Signifier – The thing that does the meaning: A red octagon. A picture of a giant lizard-like thing with horns and wings and a treasure. The words “octopus” or たこ
  2. Signified – The thing that is meant by the meaning: Stop! Dragon/Wales. An eight-tentacled sea creature of the class Cephalopoda (“head-foot”)
