Rhetoric, Rhetorical Appeals

Rhetoric, Rhetorical AppealsRhetoric is the art of persuasion. The three rhetorical appeals, into which evidence can be sometimes be divided, are:

  1. The Ethical – You ask the reader to think of how society thinks she should act
  2. The Pathetic (the emotional) – You ask the reader to laugh or to cry; these emotional peaks sell the reader on your point
  3. The Logical – You ask the reader to remain calm and think the issue through rationally: What is the best objective interpretation of the evidence presented?
