Metaphor, short version – Comparing unalike objects, entities, thoughts, places, people. The basis of language and thought. Metaphor flattens two or more objects onto the same plane: E.g., when we read “monkey bars,” in one instant, the mind sees the monkey playing on the bars, the bars of the jail cell, the child on the playground. All images are flat with one another; none is “more correct;” the metaphor arises out of all of these conflated. We call them monkey bars because all parts of the metaphor are true for them—including barness, monkeyness, childness, etc. All words begin as metaphor. Think of the head of the table, the foot of the stairs, an arm or branch of government…
