Essay Structure

Essay Structure – Every text has its own beautiful organic structure. These are VERY ROUGH guidelines for a general “academic essay.” Please consider them. They make sense. They can help you, if you are feeling lost.

PLANNING
0. Research – what are you going to write about? what evidence supports your idea?
(Intermezzo 1. Outlining, brainstorming, doodling, procrastinating)

WRITING
1. Introductionthesis and summary of evidence
2. Supporting Evidence 1 – give evidence; show how it links back to and proves thesis
3. Supporting Evidence 2 – give evidence; show how it links back to and proves thesis
4. Supporting Evidence 3 – give evidence, show how it links back to and proves thesis
5. Conclusion – reiterate your thesis; bring your essay into the present, real world for us (punchline and end-credit music, celebration)
(Intermezzo 2. Proofreading, arguing about grades, fact-checking)

REWRITING
0′., 1′., 2′., etc. Revision – what have you learned from writing? how can you revisit not only your prose (sentences, grammar, etc.) but also your structure (use of evidence) and even your main idea (thesis itself)?
